Twin Lakes Elementary School

Green Roof and Walkway
We recently completed a composite deck path on the green roof of Twin Lakes Elementary School in Elk River, MN. The green roof is located off the media center on the second floor. With the original design, rock paths were created throughout the plant covered roof to allow students to walk around and look at the various plants and possibly host class outside. While the rock covered paths were aesthetically pleasing, they did not allow for ADA accesibility. Dale Gruber Construction devised a solution: we covered some of the paths with composite decking. This made the green roof ADA accessible and being composite decking is made partly of recycled plastic, it added another green feature to the project. The new deck path was done in a cooperative effort with the Elk River School District, the local building official, and the architect of Twin Lakes Elementary to ensure all compliance issues were met. Dale Gruber Construction was happy to be a part of the project, enabling everyone to utilize the green roof and helping the school obtain LEED Certification.
